| Mary Magdalene, Christianity's hidden goddess ( Lynn Picknett ) |
| The Magdalene is traditionally portrayed, both in art and religion, as a marginal figure, a reformed prostitute and true penitent befriend by Jesus. In the Gospels she appears close to Jesus but secondary in importance to Peter and the other male disciples. In more recent times there have been moves to adopt her as an icon of liberal Christianity and a 'thirteenth' disciple.
But there is another much more signifiant Magdalene emerging from the ancient records-one who was known as the 'Apostle of the Apostles' and ' The Woman Who Knew All'. In this fascinating book, Lynn Picknett proves herself an expert in historical detection, as she strips away the layers of deception and propaganda surrounding the Christian story to find out the truth about Mary Magdalene.
The Gnostic Gospels reveal that for the early Church she was second in importance only to Jesus himself, and over the centuries that followed so-called heretics such as the Cathars retained in their doctrines elements of the Gnostic beliefs. Mary and Jesus were lovers and spiritual partners, and she may even have borne him children. There is good reason to believe she may not have been a jewish woman from the shores of Lake Galilee, but could in fact have come from Ethiopia, a land with its own cult of itinerant priestessesn known to have travelled as far as Egypt and Israel to preach.
Piknett applies a serious and radical re-evaluation of the evidence from the Gospels, canonical and heredical, the contemporary Gnostic works, and ancient Egyptian texts, and pursues the legacy of this mysterious woman through fiels as diverse as the art of Leonardo da Vinci and the statues of Black Madonnas. Using both scholastic and heretical sources she makes her case that virtually everything the Church has ever led us to believe about Mary Magdalene is not only wrong but part of a deliberate two-millennia long conspiracy to cover up some uncomfortable facts. The Church of Rome may have deliberately excised references to her from the Christian gospels, seeing her as a threat to its own patriarchal powers.
Picknett believes we should forget everything we were taught about the traditional Mary Magdalene- the centuries of propaganda are over . It is time to see the real woman and to reassess the history of Christianity. |
